Update: Wichita police nab a woman accused ofgoing door to door in Wichita, supposedly soliciting donations for the American Red Cross.  Police had been looking for her since last week when a citizen called in a complaint.  Twitter and Facebook were used to spread the word, including WPD's Facebook page. Around 4:00 pm Sunday afternoon, Police got a call from a home in the 2400 block of S. Cypress.  The homeowner said the lady was going door to door in her neighborhood.  Officers went over there.  They found and questioned the 44-year-old woman and booked her on suspicion of theft by deception.

A local volunteer, David Schreiner, with the American Red Cross, is heading to Minot, North Dakota Thursday to help with the recovery effort from this summer's heavy flooding. The American Red Cross - Midway Chapter says some families are still living in shelters after flooding forced them from their homes. Schreiner says this year has been busy as he has already traveled to Memphis to help with flooding and Joplin as part of the tornado recovery effort. He says he get something personal out of the volunteer work.

The Midway Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross receives a $50,000 check Thursday that will help people in need pay their electricity bills. The money is from Westar Energy in support of Project Deserve. That's a partnership between the utility company and the charity the helps Kansans who cannot afford their electricity bills. Under Project Deserve, people with certain income levels who cannot afford their bills can get assistance of up to $300 for an electric bill. The Red Cross says, since the partnership began, it has provided nearly $9 million in assistance to more than 56,000 people.

Using social networking to encourage people to donate blood. That was the goal behind the first annual "bleed-up" for the Midway-Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross Friday. It takes its name from a tweet-up, where users of Twitter gather in person to learn more about social media. It was using Twitter to get people to gather and donate blood. The "bleed-up" was organized by local ad agency Armstrong-Shank.

Sedgwick County Emergency Management is asking that anyone wishing to assist the community and residents affected by last evening's tornados and severe weather to contact the United Way. Volunteers wishing to assist or donate items are asked to contact United Way's 211 call center. It is imperative that volunteers do not go directly to any damaged areas as emergency crews are working to access the areas. RED CROSS UPDATE: WICHITA , Kan., 4/15/12 - The American Red Cross is working the morning after severe weather and tornadoes displaced people and families throughout south-central Kansas.

Press Release The Midway-Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross June 12th, 2008 Throughout the night of Wednesday, June 11, and early morning Thursday, June 12, severe weather including tornadoes struck much of north-central Kansas. In response, the American Red Cross set up a shelter located on the Abilene Fairgrounds in Sterl Hall located at the intersection of NW Eighth St. and N. Rogers. It housed 35 people Wednesday night, and more are expected in the following nights as many families are without power.

As Summer comes to Kansas, the Midway Kansas chapter of the American Red Cross begins its annual fan giveaway. During the Summer, the Red Cross will provide fans to those who may not have, or cannot afford, air conditioning. One of those is Twila Irvin, who picked up a fan on Wednesday. She is a widow who cares for an adopted 6-year-old and suffers from heart disease. She calls the fan a blessing and hopes it keeps her cool all Summer. "Having a small house and pretty much just one window that opens real well, this is just going to bring that air through my house and hopefully keep some things cool," said Irvin.

Koch Industries, Inc. has announced that it will donate a million dollars for disaster relief efforts in Japan.  Half of that money will go to the American Red Cross, the other half to The Salvation Army. The donation comes after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. “Our hearts go out to the people of Japan as they deal with overwhelming and unfolding challenges,” said Dave Robertson, president and COO of Koch Industries in a press release. “Although our presence there is small with only seventy-five employees, this is an important humanitarian effort.

The American Red Cross says Hurricane Irene is responsible for the cancellation of more than 60 Red Cross blood drives across the country. Those cancellations resulted in a loss of more than 2,100 units of blood. Since storm damage and power outages are expected to cause additional cancellations in the coming days, the Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations nationwide. “Right now, there is an immediate need for blood platelets in the Central Plains Region.

American Red Cross offices in Great Bend and Colby could soon be closing, as the organization deals with the still struggling economy. A spokesperson for the Red Cross in Wichita says there are plans to close the officers by Sept. 2. The Red Cross says the changes come as part of a nationwide reorganization in response to the down economy and increases the organization faces in health and retirement benefits. The Red Cross says the change will not impact health and safety classes, blood drives and response to emergencies in those communities.

The American Red Cross is asking for more blood -- specifically Type O Negative, which it says has dropped to critically low levels. The organization says Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.  It also says donations have been low, due to fewer blood drives during the summer school break and people being on vacation.
