The Hutchinson Animal Shelter is asking for donations to help build a new outside area for dogs. It's volunteers say the space is needed to make sure pets get enough exercise and stay healthy while they are waiting for adoption. The shelter has on average 30 to 40 dogs waiting to be adopted. The shelter's volunteers say they spend too much time in their kennels because the only time they get walked is when the volunteers can walk them. Heather Toal's dog, "Jack", ran away earlier this month. Now, the Chihuahua has been given away to another family by the McPherson Animal Shelter. Toal blames a communication breakdown between McPherson Police dispatch and the animal shelter for her dog being adopted by another family before Toal was informed "Jack" had been found. Jack escaped out the back door February 9th. After Toal tried unsuccessfully to find him, she phoned police dispatch the next day to report the lost animal. Police say a dispatcher advised Toal to also call the shelter to report him missing. Toal said over the next few days, she tried to call the shelter several times, but did not leave a voice message and may have dialed the wrong number. Toal finally went to the shelter on February 18th. She learned "Jack" was at the shelter, but that he had already been adopted and was being moved to Boston.
