NEWS
By Meteorologist Dean Jones and Storm Team 12 | May 12, 2012
It looks like a cloudy, cool and damp day across most of central and eastern Kansas with off and on rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder today.  There may be a few breaks in the clouds at times but highs will only  reach the 50s and 60s statewide. Mostly cloudy skies in the east with any showers diminishing after sunset, while western Kansas can expect another round of showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder, mainly after midnight.  Expect lows in the 40s to lower 50s. It appears to be a soggy Mother's Day for western Kansas, however central and eastern Kansas will start out cloudy with a few peeks of sun as we work into the afternoon.  Highs will reach the 60s to low 70s.  A warming trend will kick in next week.

A few showers and storms are rumbling over western Kansas.  Widespread severe weather is not expected there, but an isolated storm or two could produce strong winds.  Elsewhere, we'll see gathering clouds overnight as lows in the 50s and 60s are forecast. More windy, hot and dry weather will be around again Friday as highs reach the upper 80s to lower and middle 90s.  A Wind Advisory is out for parts of central and western Kansas as those south winds exceed 35-40 mph. The best prospects for rain will likely develop late Saturday afternoon and evening as a storm system approaches the viewing area.

The cold front that moved through last night and sparked severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes across southcentral Kansas has moved into Oklahoma this morning.  A few lingering showers and rumbles of thunder continue across western Kansas but will continue to weaken as the morning progresses.  Mostly cloudy skies will turn to mostly sunny skies in the west, with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies developing by afternoon in the east.  Highs in the 70s to near 80 statewide!  It will be partly cloudy statewide tonight with temperatures dropping into the 40s and lower 50s.  A nice night to open up the windows and enjoy some fresh cool air. Back to school and work on Monday with plenty of sunshine and temperatures near normal for late May.  Highs are expected to reach the upper 70s and 80s. The heat and wind will return for the rest of the week.

Isolated thunderstorms may drift into far western Kansas this evening. Few if any of these storms are expected to be severe. The rest of the state should see clear to partly cloudy skies. Tuesday will bring lots of sunshine but also lots of wind. Gusts should be in the 30-35 mph range across all but the eastern 1/4 of the state. Wednesday looks mostly sunny, windy and hotter with much of the state seeing temperatures in the 90s. Thunderstorm chances will increase around the state Wednesday night and Thursday.

Expect the wind and temperatures to increase on Wednesday with a summerlike feel for much of the state. Skies will be mostly clear overnight and it will stay mild with lows in the mid 60s central and east, but upper 50s should be expected in western Kansas. A cold front will push into northwest Kansas Wednesday afternoon, which will change the winds back to the north and knock the temperatures back into the lower 80s, but southwest, central, and southern Kansas will still have highs in the 90s. South winds will be gusting to 40 mph for much of the area.

Look for mostly cloudy skies this afternoon along with a few showers or storms moving southeast across central Kansas. Rainfall amounts should be light, generally less than a tenth of an inch and any wet weather should move through quickly. Our weekend won't be a washout but some showers and storms will be possible again Saturday night. We can also expect a slow but steady warming trend as high temperatures climb back into the 80s for much of the area Saturday followed by some low 90s Sunday, especially out west.

The weather won't change much in the coming days as high pressure continues to block widespread rain from forming in our area. Temperatures will again be in the 60s overnight with mostly clear skies and light southeast winds. Expect some increase in clouds for Wednesday with highs between 85-90 for the afternoon. The wind is expected to be out of the southeast with some gusts getting up to 30 or 35 mph for western Kansas. Scattered storms are possible in eastern Colorado and NW Oklahoma, but they will likely stay out of Kansas.

Our weather won't be changing much through week's end as a sprawling area of high pressure continues to block any storm systems from venturing into the Plains. Our lack of any upper-level storms or fronts means no real rain or thunderstorm chances through this weekend. We can expect partly to mosty cloudy skies this afternoon as highs rise back into the mid-80s to near 90 degrees. The wind should be out of the southeast with the strongest gusts over 30 to 35 mph for western Kansas.
