Baylor upset the 4th ranked Kansas Jayhawks in a big way on Saturday night. The Bears beat Kansas 81 to 58. Pierre Jackson and Corey Jefferson combined to score 53 points against the Jayhawks, and only the starting 5 scored for the Bears. Ben McLemore led the way for Kansas with 23 points while Wichita Heights' grad Perry Ellis had a bit of a breakout game with 12 points. The Jayhawks still finished the season with...

Baylor entered the rankings at No. 25 for the first time since 1993 after beating Kansas State, and also became eligible to end a 16-year bowl drought. Heady stuff around campus in Waco. The Bears' appearance in the AP poll Sunday is their first since Sept. 5, 1993, when they were ranked 24th after opening the season with a 42-39 win over then-No. 25 Fresno State. Baylor (6-2, 3-1 Big 12) held off Kansas State 47-42 on homecoming weekend Saturday behind Robert Griffin's 404 yards passing and Jay Finley's school-record 250 rushing yards.

It's a high-profile showdown in the Big 12, and it has nothing to do with Oklahoma, Texas or Oklahoma State. No. 15 Baylor visits Kansas State on Saturday in a matchup of two teams that are off to 3-0 starts, each with out-of-conference statement victories already to their credit. The Bears opened the season with a showcase win over TCU, and the Wildcats are coming off a win at Miami. Baylor is led by Robert Griffin III, who has emerged as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate.

Robert Griffin III threw his first interception at exactly the wrong time. Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown picked off Baylor's star quarterback in the closing minutes Saturday, setting up Anthony Cantele's 31-yard field goal that sent the Wildcats to a stunning 36-35 win over the No. 15 Bears. Collin Klein threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns and added 113 yards and another score for the Wildcats (4-0), who won their third straight Big 12 opener - this one in dramatic fashion.

Baylor continues to be oh for life in Lawrence. The third-ranked Bears were blitzed by #7 Kansas, 92-74 Monday night in Allen Field House. The Jayhawks, who've lost but seven times at home in Head Coach Bill Self's nine seasons, took a ten point lead at the half and cruised home in the second. KU shot 57 percent from the field and got 28 points and 6 assists from Tyshawn Taylor, the current Big 12 Player of the Week. Thomas Robinson chipped in 27 points and 14 rebounds as the Jayhawks improve to 15-3 on the season.

Tyshawn Taylor coasted down the right side of the lane, lofted a pass over the Baylor defense, then stood back and watched as Thomas Robinson took to the air, grabbed the ball with his right hand and threw it down with rim-rattling authority. It was that kind of night for Taylor and Robinson. For Kansas, too. Robinson had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Taylor matched a career-high with 28 points and the seventh-ranked Jayhawks rolled to a 92-74 victory Monday night, ending the third-ranked Bears' perfect start and proving once more that the road to the Big 12 title goes through Kansas.

I'll give you the madness of March, but there's nothing better than the month of February in college hoops. Conference races are climaxing and teams are seeing each other for the second time through. There are no secrets in February, just tough, unyeilding, brawls in games that are usually close. Beyond that, the importance of every game in a tight race is magnified--both Kansas and Wichita State play in such games tonight. Northern Iowa at Wichita State The Valley race is the Shockers to lose--or win, as I'm sure they'd rather refer to it. Evansville's upset of Creighton last night gives WSU a one game lead inthe conference with five games to play. None of them will be easy, starting with a suddenly hot Northern Iowa tonight. The Panthers are coming off an upset of Creighton in which they committed just two turnovers. Head coach Ben Jacobsen has inserted Freshman guard Deon Mitchell into the starting lineup and are bringing leading scorer Anthony James off the bench. James hit the last second three-pointer to beat the Jays in Cedar Falls, IA last weekend and the Panthers come into Wichita on a two game win streak.

As Shane Southwell walked into the post-game conference room he turned to the woman behind him and said, 'Mom, welcome to my world.' His mother had just watched her son light up the scoreboard with 18 points against Baylor in a dominating 81-61 victory and this was the first time she would watch him speak in post-game. As Shane walked up to the podium his mother turned and asked me, 'It's ok if I take pictures right?' I smiled and said, 'absolutely.' Southwell was just a piece of one of the most balanced and dominating Kansas State efforts all season. Southwell was one of four Wildcats who would finish in double digits scoring. Two of those players also finished with double-doubles; Jordan Henriquez had 10 points and 10 rebounds while Angel Rodriguez finished as the leading scorer with 22 points and 10 assists.
