It could have been interpreted as the first salvo fired against bitter rival Kansas State the day Charlie Weis was presented as the new coach at Kansas. Weis stepped to the podium and asked this rhetorical question: Why was the University of Kansas 2-10 last season and why was Kansas State 10-2? "I don't have that answer," he said, "but that is what I am here for. " Over the last 10 months, he may have found some answers. Weis spent the better part of Tuesday's media availability praising the Wildcats and longtime coach Bill Snyder, who is 16-4 against the Jayhawks.

Charlie Weis and his new-look Jayhawks are closing in on their first game of the season, now just over a week away, and the push is on to get everything ready in time for South Dakota State. One thing that's already set: the depth chart. Even though Weis won't release it until next week, the former Notre Dame coach said Tuesday that about "90 percent" of the depth chart is set. The only remaining gray area involves a couple of players who arrived late to fall camp. Weis also said he's started to plan for the opener against South Dakota State on Sept.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen is no stranger to the Big 12. While the Mountaineers are league newcomers, Holgorsen was a Big 12 assistant coach for nine of 11 seasons before becoming their coach. He was at Texas Tech for eight seasons and spent a year as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator. Holgorsen says West Virginia is a lot like Big 12 schools: There is a football culture, a passionate fan base to fill the stadium and a team used to winning. New Kansas coach Charlie Weis also spoke during the second day of Big 12 media days Tuesday.

Tony Pierson stole the spotlight from Dayne Crist's debut at Kansas, and showed new Jayhawks coach Charlie Weis some breakaway speed on an impressive 88-yard touchdown run Saturday. Pierson and Crist led the blue team, made up primarily of first-team players, to a 45-0 win over the white team on a sunny afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Crist was 11 of 19 for 156 yards in the most anticipated spring debut by a Kansas player in years. He was recruited by Weis to Notre Dame, but injuries set him back and Weis was eventually fired.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis is ready to get his new team on the field. The Jayhawks play their annual spring game on Saturday, and there is plenty riding on the outcome. It's the first chance for high-profile transfers such as Dayne Crist to impress in a game environment, and the first opportunity for dozens of other guys to lay claim to a roster spot. Weis is in his first season as the coach at Kansas. He was hired to resurrect a recently winning program that had fallen on hard times under Turner Gill, who was fired after a 2-10 season.

Charlie Weis completed his first coaching staff at Kansas on Thursday by hiring Wisconsin assistant DeMontie Cross to coach the linebackers. Cross spent last season coaching the Badgers' special teams and safeties. Before that, the former Missouri safety coached at Sam Houston State, Iowa State and for five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, primarily handling the linebackers. Weis wanted the defensive staff in place by the weekend, when several defensive recruits will be on campus.

University of Kansas football has long needed a shot in the arm and Charlie Weis looks to provide it. The new head coach of Jayhawk football spoke for the first time Monday afternoon since his hiring in November and made it very clear things would be changing in Lawrence. Weis announced the dismissal and exit of 10 former players including last season's starting quarterback Jordan Webb and running back Darrian Miller, among others. Miller was dismissed for reasons Weis would not disclose and Webb left the team voluntarily but is still enrolled at KU. "I don't care if they were all starters, it doesn't make a difference; there is a right and wrong way of doing things and you are going to do it the right way," Weis said.
