By Meteorologist Ross Janssen and Storm Team 12 | November 27, 2011
Ahead of the next cold front, temperatures will be warming up nicely for Monday afternoon. It will be cold around the area tonight with lows in the teens and low 20s. Skies will be clear with light winds expected. Sunshine will be abundant on Monday with some high, thin clouds drifting in during the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be near 60 in the west, with highs in the lower 50s for central and eastern Kansas. We will not have much wind on Monday, but a cold front is expeted to move through Monday night, keeping the winds out of the north and allowing colder air to settle south into Tuesday.

Look for clear to mostly clear skies overhead during the night as a weak cold front passes through Kansas.  Temperatures will be chilly to start off Friday morning with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s across the state.  A Frost Advisory is in effect for the northwest part of the viewing area, including Colby, St. Francis, Oberlin and Goodland. Quite a bit of sunshine will be found on Friday as mostly sunny skies prevail.  High temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. You'll get a taste of summer on Saturday with highs in the 80s but it's back to Fall by Sunday as another cold front blasts through.  No rain is expected Sunday though as highs reach the 60s and 70s. A windy Monday will be followed by even chillier temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.

Summer will be back for a brief visit across Kansas this afternoon as highs warm to the upper 80s to lower to middle 90s.  We expect plenty of sunshine. Clear to mostly clear skies are forecast tonight as a cold front pushes into northwest Kansas.  Lows will fall to the 50s and 60s. That cold front will pass through Kansas during the first half of Thursday, dropping highs back to the 70s and 80s.  There will be no moisture around so the front will pass through dry. It will stay dry this weekend and through the middle of next week.

A cold front over western Kansas is sparking a line of showers and embedded thunderstorms.  Over eastern and southcentral Kansas is a band of moderate to occasionally heavy rain.  Later this evening the later band will move away from Wichita as the cold front and line of storms head our way.  This activity will end completely across the viewing area later tonight. On Friday, other than a few clouds in the southeast, we expect abundant sunshine and a very mild afternoon with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.  Another approaching storm system from the north will bring in some clouds Saturday afternoon.

More hot weather is on tap Tuesday but there should be a bit of a cooling trend toward the middle of the week. Triple digit high temperatures will be the rule on Tuesday but a cold front slipping southward Tuesday night and Wednesday should provide the relief. A few thunderstorms should accompany the front, beginning Tuesday evening in northwest Kansas and spreading east and southeastward into Wednesday. ___________________ Wichita Area Forecast: Tonight:   Clear and warm.  Wind: SE 5-10.  Low: 73. Tomorrow:   Mostly sunny.  Wind: SE 5-15.  High: 100. Tomorrow night:  Increasing clouds.  Wind: SE 5-15.  Low: 75. Wed:  High:  94      Mostly cloudy with scattered late day storms.

It was a record-setting day for Wichita and Dodge City as new record highs were established.  Wichita hit 106, breaking the old record of 105 which was set in 1943.  Other than some isolated storms in western Kansas during the early evening, we expect mostly clear skies for the majority of our viewing area.  Overnight lows will dip down into the 70s for most of the Sunflower State. Tomorrow we expect a weak cold front to slide across Kansas but temperatures will still be toasty for most.  Expect middle to upper 90s in northern Kansas, with plenty of triple digits again for the south.  We expect Wichita to reach 103, which would be day number 46 of triple digits in 2011.  This would tie the sizzling summer of 1980 for the second most triple digits in a calendar year.

Look for a sizzling Friday afternoon as highs to range from the upper 90s to near 100 over eastern Kansas to near 105 over the southwest. You can also look for a mix of sunny to mostly sunny skies along with southerly winds and a bit more humidity Friday. A few isolated storms will be possible over northwest Kansas late Friday and again Saturday but it looks like a better bet to get wet for more folks will move in late Sunday into early Monday when the next cold front arrives.

Look for clear to mostly clear skies across Kansas overnight as lows dip to the 40s.  Light winds will prevail. We'll see the breeze and temperatures pick up quickly on Saturday.  Southerly winds will be gusty at times especially in central and western Kansas.  Afternoon highs will be summer-like in the lower to middle 80s for most.  Sunny to mostly sunny skies will be the rule. A cold front will zip through early Sunday.  While no moisture will be present for a rain chance, we do see a bit of a drop in the thermometer.  Highs Sunday will top out in the 60s and 70s. A more powerful cold front will work through late Monday.  Look for gusty winds behind it and much chillier weather.  Highs will only reach the 60s Tuesday and Wednesday, with lows Wednesday morning and Thursday morning in the 30s, including in the Wichita area!
