Cold Front

NEWS
By Meteorologist Ross Janssen and Storm Team 12 | February 15, 2011
Temperatures will continue to be above average the next few days with gusty south winds picking up ahead of a storm system that will be developing west of the Rockies. Overnight lows will stay in the 30s across Kansas tonight, and we'll have a head start on the warmup for Wednesday. South winds will be gusting to 35 mph in parts of the state, and with the dry conditions, fire danger will be very high. The wind is expected to stay rather gusty into Thursday as temperatures will threaten record levels during the afternoon.

A cold front will settle south of Kansas tonight and north winds will be bringing back cooler temperatures for the start of the new week. Although skies will be staying mostly cloudy overnight, Kansas is expected to stay dry. North winds of 15-25 mph and gusty should be expected through the overnight hours and into the first half of the day Monday. Late in the day, winds will begin to back down with high pressure pushing closer to our area by Monday night. After seeing highs in the 60s and 70s over the weekend, be prepared for highs in the low to mid 40s Monday with decreasing clouds.

Warm temperatures will close out the work week across Kansas.  However, a cold front will venture into western and central Kansas by tomorrow afternoon.  Highs Friday will warm to the 70s in southern Kansas ahead of the front, while 60s will be found behind it. A cooler weekend is expected as plenty of sunshine is forecast Saturday.  Look for highs in the 50s. On Sunday, clouds will gather as a weak storm system gathers to our west.  There will be a chance of showers in western and central Kansas Sunday afternoon with highs in the lower to middle 50s.  Showers will make it into Wichita Sunday night.

After seeing wind gusts near 60 Friday afternoon, expect the wind to drop back between 15-25 mph after midnight over Kansas. A cold front will be pushing through the state tonight and very early Saturday, which will turn the winds back to the north and cool temperatures down for the weekend. Saturday will see increasing clouds during the afternoon, but no rain expected in our area. Highs will be in the mid 50s in the northwest, with upper 60s in the Wichita area.

Scattered clouds and rain showers from Monday afternoon will be dissipating overnight, which will allow temperatures to drop into the mid 30s across much of the state. Frost advisories have been issued for parts of Kansas for Tuesday morning. The winds will change back to the south and west for Tuesday, and despite a chilly morning, temperatures in the afternoon will be getting back into the low 70s in western Kansas, with highs near 70 in central and eastern parts of the state.

A cold front will stall over central Kansas tonight and that may lead to a few isolated storms in northern Kansas after midnight. Temperatures on Saturday will not be as hot, but still well above average for early July. Areas along and north of I-70 will likely have the cooler temperatures, but everyone else will still be pushing the century mark during the afternoon. Scattered storms will mainly be in Nebraska Saturday night, but some of the storms may clip northcentral and northeast Kansas.

A cold front will continue to push away from eastern Kansas Thursday morning. Scattered early morning showers will slide eastward along and north of I-70 and dry up by afternoon. Behind the front Thursday afternoon we can expect lighter winds, decreasing clouds and cooler temperatures. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s with more sunshine than clouds later in the day. Warmer temperatures and gusty winds will return Friday with highs in the 80s. The warm weather is expected to stick around through early next week when highs soar into the upper 80's and lower 90s Monday and Tuesday.
