Cold Front

NEWS
By Meteorologist Ross Janssen and Storm Team 12 | April 22, 2011
Another cold front will cross the state tonight, but the chances for showers and storms will be limited to northern Oklahoma and southeast Kansas. Temperatures are expected to remain cool throughout the weekend with highs in the mid 50s across northern Kansas to the mid 60s in the south. Saturday is expected to be dry around Kansas with increasing clouds throughout the day. The chance for rain will be back late Saturday night as moisture begins moving up from the south to interact with a storm system coming out of the west.

After a toasty Tuesday , complete with gusty winds and abundant sunshine, another cold front will be pushing into western Kansas Wednesday afternoon. The front will bring a cooler temperatures and a wind shift back to the north. Northwest Kansas will see highs in the low to mid 60s with lower 70s in the southwest. Most of central and eastern Kansas will stay in the mid to upper 70s. Unfortunately there will not be a lot of rain associated with the slow moving cold front as the supply of Gulf of Mexico moisture will be somewhat limited.

Strong south winds are expected to continue in Kansas tonight and that will keep temperatures from cooling off much as the humidity will also remain somewhat high tonight. A storm system sliding through the area on Tuesday will bring a chance for very isolated storms to central and eastern Kansas. The best chance will be east of I-135 early Tuesday afternoon, and a few of the storms may contain some hail up to 1 inch. The threat for storms will end by 6 p.m. Tuesday as a cold front then pushes across the state.

A cold front has stalled out over central Oklahoma and clouds continue to develop along the front. Kansas has not seen any rain through Friday evening, but that will change on Saturday as low level moisture begins moving back across our area. Expect low temperatures to range from the mid 30s in the northwest tonight, to the lower 40s in southcentral Kansas. Clouds will be thickening overnight, and scattered showers and storms will develop Saturday morning and be rather scattered during the afternoon.

Warm temperatures will close out the work week across Kansas.  However, a cold front will venture into western and central Kansas by tomorrow afternoon.  Highs Friday will warm to the 70s in southern Kansas ahead of the front, while 60s will be found behind it. A cooler weekend is expected as plenty of sunshine is forecast Saturday.  Look for highs in the 50s. On Sunday, clouds will gather as a weak storm system gathers to our west.  There will be a chance of showers in western and central Kansas Sunday afternoon with highs in the lower to middle 50s.  Showers will make it into Wichita Sunday night.

The mild temperatures we've enjoyed today will cool by Friday. A cold front in Nebraska will work across Kansas tonight, switching our winds to the north and becoming gusty out west.  We expect some light rain showers in the northwest tonight to eventually change to some light snow.  On Friday, expect plenty of clouds around the state with light snow changing back to light rain in the northwest.  Any accumulation of snow will be light, under an inch generally.  Meanwhile the rest of the viewing area will see light rain showers developing, especially by afternoon in eastern Kansas.

A cold front will settle south of Kansas tonight and north winds will be bringing back cooler temperatures for the start of the new week. Although skies will be staying mostly cloudy overnight, Kansas is expected to stay dry. North winds of 15-25 mph and gusty should be expected through the overnight hours and into the first half of the day Monday. Late in the day, winds will begin to back down with high pressure pushing closer to our area by Monday night. After seeing highs in the 60s and 70s over the weekend, be prepared for highs in the low to mid 40s Monday with decreasing clouds.
