A fleet of 55 trucks will roll-over Wichita streets Tuesday night. "We're not expecting a lot in the way of moisture. There's a small chance of flurries later on tonight,” Traffic Maintenance and Street Cleaning Supervisor Terry Nicholas said. His crews are worried about a re-freeze. "We pretty much got it covered as best as it can get covered. We feel comfortable with that,” Nicholas said. Even though the storm has passed, street crews are still working 12-hour shifts until the driving danger melts away.

The weather conditions Monday afternoon didn't create the best "work environment" for two Harvey County deputies. "It was pretty much a white out at that point, you couldn't see very well,” Sheriff T. Walton said. Walton says his deputies were sent to a jack-knifed semi on I-135. A trooper needed help slowing-down traffic. "Here comes a van, doing about 65 miles per hour, trying to pass another vehicle, and goes directly into my deputy,” Sheriff Walton said. The van rear-ended the deputy, sitting inside his truck.

AAA reports more than 400 people called for roadside assistance Friday. Most of the calls were to rescue stranded motorists who got stuck on streets not yet cleared by snow removal crews. Several teams were called to help drivers who slid-off the road as a result of driving too fast. One-quarter of the roadside assistance calls came from Wichita drivers.

Crews at Mid-Continent Airport will expect a long night Wednesday into Thursday. They'll use two big plows and special brooms to keep the runways, taxiways and ramp areas clear. Eventhough Wichita hasn't had much snow in the last couple of years, the brooms are sometimes used to sweep off rain. Wichita could get another several inches of snow overnight Thursday, but the equipment can handle as much as five tons of snow per hour. Scott Loesch, maintenance superintendent, said the goal is to keep two runways open at all times.
