William Allen White was born February 10, 1868, in Emporia, Kansas, to Allen and Mary Ann (Hatten) White. The family soon moved to El Dorado. While a teenager, White worked as a press apprentice before attending the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas. He worked as an editorial writer for the Kansas City Star . On April 27, 1893, White married Sallie Lindsay.

Two college students have revamped El Dorado's Star-Vu Drive-In. Brandon McClellan and Tyler Fox bought the drive-in in April, after it had been closed for two years. "It was a lot more work than we anticipated. There was a lot of renovation to do and a lot of stuff that was old and needed to be upgraded," explains McClellan. Friday was the drive-in grand opening celebration. Families were invited out before the movies started to enjoy music, inflatables and a petting zoo. The owners are hoping the drive-in brings back memories for people who grew up with the theater.

It was a sad night for the Wildcats, as head coach Gary Melcher was missing from the sidelines. His mother had passed away. "We are thinking about coach Melcher tonight," assistant coach Jordan Regehr said. "We wish he could have been here. " And on Friday the El Dorado boys team got their first loss, falling to McPherson 65-40. "It was the first time they've had to play without coach Melcher," Regehr said. Regehr had the tough job of rallying the troops to take on a 7-1 McPherson team in the roundhouse.

No one was hurt when a car slammed into storefronts along El Dorado's Main Street Monday morning. The Chevrolet HHR crashed into El Dorado School of Karate at 109 N. Main Street. It also damaged Wells Designs Screen Printing and Embroidery. The driver suffered a diabetic reaction but is expected to be okay. No one inside the stores were hurt.

by Joe Ballard (EL DORADO, Kan.) Friday, hundreds of volunteers went to El Dorado to help Numana, INC. package food to send to Haiti. We first told you about their efforts in December as they prepared food for children in Haiti. They're doing the same thing again. All the food being packaged today will be sent to Haiti by early next week. Numana President Rick McNary says the response has been overwhelming. He says: "People are concerned, they know that what they're doing is going to actually impact Haiti within three or four days.

By Kim Hynes (EL DORADO, Kan.) Three El Dorado residents face charges for making counterfeit money. The fake $100 bills have been circulating El Dorado businesses for the last six weeks. It prompted many to turn away customers with big bills. El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren says the fake bills were made by bleaching $5 bills. He says they printed those bills and turned them into $100. He says at a quick glance they looked real and they passed the marker test. Boren says for cashier's in a hurry to get to customers, it's not surprise they got into the cash drawer.

Do you know where your water comes from? The city of Wichita currently gets its water from two places - Cheney Reservoir and the Equus Beds Aquifer. But those aquifers are losing fresh water, which could be a problem down the road. So a local community has a solution. You use it, probably more than you know. "Shower, dishes, and in the summertime, water the yard," explained Tony Ohlman. He was watering his lawn with it. As long as people have it, most don't care where their water was before it got into their pipes.

An early morning house fire in El Dorado sends a man to the hospital in critical condition. A fire captain tells us someone else in the house woke up smelling smoke and found the fire. It happened around 3:30 Thursday morning in the 400 block of West Kansas. He dragged the victim out of the house and made sure another two were up and out of the house. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The other man refused treatment at the scene. Early estimates put damage at 15-20 thousand dollars.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a house fire in El Dorado. The fire started at the home near Washington and Pine around 6:00 pm Tuesday. Click for Photos from the Fire Scene Fire Captain Max Brown says the fire was called in by an alarm company. Firefighters had to fight the fire defensively, which means they couldn't go into the home because the main floor collapsed. The home is considered a total loss. No people were hurt, but fire officials believe a family pet may have been inside at the time of the fire.
