by Chris Durden Two votes. That's the difference between the first tally from last week's vote on Proposition 2 on expanded gambling and the results of a recount. The recount found 51,868 "no" votes and 51, 624 "yes" votes. That's a difference of 244 ballots. The original different was 246 votes. The recount came at the request of the Ruffin Company, on behalf of the Wichita Greyhound Park. The park is also paying for the recount. Proposition 2 would have allowed the placement of slot machines at the Greyhound Park.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Most Kansas House members are running for re-election this year. Ninety-seven of the House's 125 members have filed the necessary paperwork with the secretary of state's office to guarantee themselves a spot on the Aug. 3 primary ballot. The latest to file this week were Republicans Lance Kinzer of Olathe and Joe Patton of Topeka. Kinzer is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. The filing deadline is noon on June 10. So far, 63 of the 76 Republicans in the House have beat the deadline.

Sedgwick County Commissioner Kelly Parks says he will not seek reelection to the 4th District Commission seat.  Board Chairman Karl Peterjohn made the announcement in an email to media Thursday. Parks was elected to the seat in 2006. Peterjohn says there are two candidates for the seat, Democrat Sharon Fearey and former county commissioner Lucy Burtnett.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A western Kansas member of the State Board of Education is running for re-election. Republican Sally Cauble, of Liberal, filed Friday for a second term in the 5th District, which covers 43 counties in western and north-central Kansas. She's the first candidate in her district to begin campaigning. Four years ago, Cauble won a Republican primary over incumbent Connie Morris, of St. Francis, a conservative who backed anti-evolution science testing standards.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Bob Hinshaw announced Tuesday that he will be seeking re-election.  He filed as a Republican. Hinshaw's career began 32 years ago as a detention deputy with the Sheriff's office. “With the current economic situation and outlook ahead, I believe it is critical that there be a firm understanding of where we have been and where we are now in order to provide the best service to everyone in Sedgwick County for the future,” said Hinshaw. “I look forward to service the community in which I was born and raised.” Hinshaw is the only candidate that has filed for Sheriff at this time.

Mike Pompeo grabbed the lead early on and carried the momentum to the end. “It's exciting to have this group of supporters saying Mike we were here for you for 16 months and we're going to help you for 12 more weeks,” says Pompeo. Just a day before local elections a state voting website malfunctions.  At least one Kansas county is worried about what that could mean for turnout Tuesday. "Did you want to electronic vote or paper vote?" asked one elections worker in the basement of the Reno County Courthouse Monday.  Voters arrived for their last chance to cast an early ballot. "I'd like to get some changes done, so wanted to vote," said Jessica Stussy from Haven. On the main floor of the courthouse, election officials worked on final preparations for Tuesday.

Next Tuesday is the General Municipality Election for Kansas communities. While some small towns battle little to no interest in local government, others are bursting with candidates filing for office.  Clearwater has the second "problem. "  And that's one reason why residents will have to know how to spell the name of their candidate when they go out to vote. "I think there's probably a lot of people that are interested in what's going on here," said Dakari Machart, who works in downtown Clearwater.  She sees signs of the coming election everyday.  "And if you drive around town there's a lot of different signs for people for write-ins.

A warning against a Cesarean section and induced labor for moms-to-be from the Kansas March of Dimes.  The organization, along with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, announced a new initiative, urging women to reach 40 weeks in their pregnancy. The groups said their goal is to drop the state's premature birthrate to 10.3 percent. It was 11.2 percent last year. The difference in those two figures, the organizations say, would save 350 babies.  According to the March of Dimes, babies born before 40 weeks could be at risk.

Update: The struggle to find school board candidates in Burrton is over.  After Eyewitness News aired a story Monday about the lack of candidates the superintendent says six people filed to run.  There are three open positions, so now each seat will have a contested race. _______________________________________________________________ Monday January 22, 2013 Students from around the area will fill chairs inside Burrton High School Tuesday.  They'll visit the school for a leadership conference.  But it's the seats inside the school board chambers that need to be filled.  Right now, no one is running for the three open positions.

The nation learned who won the presidential race before people in Sedgwick County saw a single result posted from local elections. FactFinder 12 has learned Secretary of State Kris Kobach's is now sending a team to investigate issues with Sedgwick County election results. "That's very sad. I think we owe that to the residents of Sedgwick County. The Sedgwick County Election Office says things will go better on November 6th than they did on primary night. “It's been fixed now,” says Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman. Shortly after polls closed in August, confusion began because results posted showing a majority of precincts reporting when only a few had actually been counted.
