It was a tough start to the season for the Fort Hays State football team. The Tigers went on the road to Emporia State, and were blown out 41-18. FHSU spotted the Hornets a 14-0 lead before they finaly got on the board with a 47-yard field goal from true freshman Drew O'Brien. ESU would score two more touchdowns before Fort Hays got its first TD. It came on a 6 yard pass from backup quarterback Tarean Austin to Grant Brown. Austin would later score the Tigers other touchdown on a 2 yard rush.

It almost felt like football weather as the Fort Hays State football team took to the field for the first day of fall camp at Lewis Field Stadium. The Tigers had nearly 110 players on hand as they ran through drills and walked through some plays for about three hours on Thursday morning. After several months away from the field things were understandably a little rusty. But head coach Chris Brown said, no excuses. He says the Tigers have a lot of work to do if they want to break into the upper echelon of the MIAA.

The Fort Hays State community is morning the loss of one of the brightest stars to ever set foot on the Lewis Field Stadium turf. OJ Murdock died in his hometown of Tampa, Florida from what police believe was a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Officers found Murdock unresponsive in his car in front of his former high school in Florida on Monday morning. Murdock played for the Tigers in 2009 and 2010 and set Fort Hays States records for receiving yards and yards per catch in a season and was all time second in touchdowns scored.

Fort Hays State junior outfielder Ryan Busboom has been honored as a Daktronics First Team All-American selection, as voted on by sports information directors throughout the nation in NCAA Division II. He also has received the same honor from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). After being named the Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year, the Cortland, Neb., native is one of three players in Division II named to the first team in the outfield.

Fort Hays State senior linebacker Alex Whitehill is one of three male finalists for the MIAA's Ken B. Jones Award, a yearly award given to one male and one female for their athletic, academic, and service accomplishments for the current school year and the body of work throughout their collegiate career. The winner of the award will be announced at the annual MIAA Awards Dinner, which is set for June 7 at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown in Kansas City, Mo. Whitehill is the first-ever finalist from Fort Hays State for this honor since FHSU joined the conference in 2006-07.

Fort Hays State University has released a statement on the arrest of five basketball players over the weekend. Omar McDade, Markus Yarbrough, Lance Russell and Kendrick Morse are out of jail on a $30,000 bond each. A fifth player, Karron McKenzie, was arrested later. Police say the men were involved in a fight at a Hays bar. Even though that fight was broken up, police say it started again as the men were walking back to the FHSU campus. The school released the following statment on Thursday: We regret people were injured in this altercation.

A total of 205 points were scored in the overtime thriller between Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern on Friday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. FHSU pulled out a thrilling 103-102 overtime win over Missouri Southern to advance to the semifinals on Saturday evening against the tournament's top seed Washburn. Fort Hays State (19-8) took a three point lead with 13 seconds remaining when Moses Dayee  hit one of two free-throws, but Jason Adams of Missouri Southern was fouled on a jump shot with seven seconds remaining.

FHSU seniors Matt Simmons, Karron McKenzie, and Moses Dayee were honored on Tuesday (Feb. 28) with the release of the All-MIAA Men's Basketball Team. Simmons earned second team honors and was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while McKenzie and Dayee earned third team honors. This is the second straight year that a Tiger has won the Defensive Player of the Year award. Simmons, the conference's leader in rebounds (10.0 per game) and blocked shots (2.0 per game), earns his first all-conference nod in the MIAA, joining the second team.
