Hutchinson police have arrested a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of another man on Halloween. The man was arrested on charges of 2nd Degree Murder, Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Criminal Discharge of a Firearm. Police say 26-year-old Dustin Brooks was shot in the torso in an alley in the 200 block of N. Cleveland Wednesday night. Police say the victim was driven to another home in the 100 block of East A. Avenue then to the fire station at B Avenue and Walnut. That's where EMS crews picked him up and rushed him to the hospital. Doctors performed emergency surgery, but it was not enough to save his life.

Jury selection is complete in the murder of a Hutchinson mother. Christopher Logsdon's trial will begin this week. He's charged with first degree murder in the death of Jennifer Heckel. Heckel was killed in her home in June 2011. She was shot in the back and head. Prosecutors have said her death was a case of mistaken identity. Logsdon and another man, Billy Joe Craig, Jr., are both charged with her murder. They both have pleaded not guilty. Opening statements in Logsdon's trial are expected Thursday.

Vandals shoot BB guns at homes, cars and even the Kansas Cosmosphere overnight in Hutchinson. Police say they've received between 20 and 25 vandalism reports so far. An inmate who walked away from a work detail assignment is back in custody. Authorities were looking for Juan Marquez who left his job at the Collins Bus Company. He walked away Tuesday afternoon. Authorities captured him a short time later. Marquez is serving time at Hutchinson Correctional Facility on several burglary and theft charges.

Authorities evacuate a home in Hutchinson because of a gas leak. The leak happened Tuesday morning at 32nd Terrace and Carnegie Place. A road construction crew struck a large gas line while working. The residents living in the home will have to stay out until the Kansas Gas Company fixes the problem. No one has been injured and no major damage was caused by the leak.

A Hutchinson police officer involved in a crash while riding a Segway has sued the maker of the upright motorized scooter and a local business that sold it. Ofc. Jamie Schoenhoff was injured in an on-duty accident September 16, 2010 while responding to an emergency call at the Kansas State Fair. Schoenhoff said as he rode full speed to the scene, the Segway went over a bump and the metal kickstand came down. He likened it to a pole vaulter on the track. "If you're running down the pole vault lane and stick your pole vault in the pit it's not going anywhere," said Schoenhoff.

Reporting and analysis the news was not what Candy Crowley set out to do with her life. After majoring in English, she wanted to write the “great American novel.” Crowley spoke about her life and her career as a journalist Tuesday at Hutchinson Community College. She told other reporters when she realized she needed a job. “It occurred to me that no-one pays you do that when it's your first novel,” she said. That's when she took her first position at a small radio station.

A Hutchinson high school student was approached by strangers on her way to school Friday. Police say the 16-year-old girl was on her way to school when a black SUV pulled up beside her at 12th and Maple. She says the passenger of the vehicle approached her while the driver remained in the SUV. It's unclear what the men said to her, but police say the teen was not physically injured. She did not know the suspects and didn't recognize the vehicle. The SUV left driving north on Maple.

Sheriff's deputies in Reno County arrested a Hutchinson bail bondsman Friday afternoon. The 66-year-old is accused of promoting prostitution. The man may be charged as soon as monday. Eyewitness News is not naming him until he his. Sheriff Randy Henderson says the investigation has been going on for awhile and is currently on-going.
