The Chicago Bears have hired Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery as their new general manager. Emery was an area scout for the Bears from 1998-2004. He replaces Jerry Angelo, who was fired after an injury-riddled 8-8 season. Emery and New England Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht were finalists and both interviewed twice. The Bears also interviewed San Diego Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross, and current director of player personnel Tim Ruskell.

Spokesman Pete Moris told The Associated Press late Thursday afternoon there will be no blackout of Sunday's game with the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs had said Wednesday a blackout was a possibility, with slow ticket sales for a game expected to be played on a very cold day when many people will be busy with family events. The Kansas City Chiefs have taken quarterback Ricky Stanzi of Iowa with their first selection in the fifth round. Stanzi could compete with Brodie Croyle as backup to Matt Cassel, who went to the Pro Bowl for the first time last year. In his last year at Iowa, Stanzi hit 221 of 345 passes for 3,004 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was intercepted only six times. One historical oddity about the Chiefs is they have never drafted and developed a successful starting quarterback of their own.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to buck the trend in the NFL draft Thursday night. Quarterbacks have gone first overall the past four years, but most people believe there isn't one available worthy of the selection. So the Chiefs may opt for an offensive tackle, even though only two have been picked No. 1 since 1970. Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel and Central Michigan's Eric Fisher are the best bets, while Oklahoma's Lane Johnson is also in the mix. The Chiefs could also trade out of the pick.

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) - The members of the Greensburg High School football team have seen better days, before their homes and school were demolished in the May 4th twister. Greensburg Rangers head coach Clint Young -- whose newly purchased home was destroyed that night -- is philosophical, saying "Football is all about overcoming adversity. " And with all that destruction has come something else: celebrity. Golf manufacturer Titleist donated clubs to the school's state-contending golf team last spring.
