Detroit prospect Nick Castellanos hit a three-run homer during a nine-run sixth inning, and Royals minor leaguer Wil Myers added three RBIs to lead the U.S. team to a 17-5 rout of the World team in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday. Billy Hamilton and Manny Machado each drove in two runs for the U.S. team, contributing to a record 22 combined runs during the annual prospect showcase. Castellanos was the game's MVP, but it was Myers who drew the biggest reaction. The 21-year-old outfielder received a standing ovation from an adoring sellout crowd that has been pining for his arrival all season.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia pounded out a three-run homer, left-hander Andrew Miller gave Red Sox manager Terry Francona precisely what he was looking for and Boston rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. Miller (5-1) allowed one run on three hits and a pair of walks over 5 1-3 innings, rarely finding himself in any trouble against the Royals' feeble offense. It was his first start since July 31 after a pair of appearances out of the bullpen, and his first victory since July 20 at Baltimore.

Gio Gonzalez outdueled Zack Greinke and the Oakland Athletics caught a big break in the first inning en route to a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night, disappointing a rare Kauffman Stadium sellout crowd. Kevin Kouzmanoff had a two-run single for the Athletics while Gonzalez (8-6) allowed seven hits and one walk in seven innings. Relievers Craig Breslow and Michael Wuertz each pitched a shutout inning. Leading off the game, Oakland's Coco Crisp was awarded a double after first base umpire Larry Vanover first ruled a foul ball on Crisp's liner down the right field line.

Felipe Paulino kept the scuffling Athletics at bay for six innings Friday night, and the Kansas City Royals' bullpen handled the rest in a 2-0 victory that gave Oakland its season-worst ninth straight loss. Yuniesky Betancourt came off the disabled list to provide an RBI double in the first, and Mike Moustakas added an RBI blooper to left later in the inning, helping Kansas City win for only the sixth time in 23 games at Kauffman Stadium this season. Paulino (3-1) has emerged as the ace of the Royals' haphazard starting rotation, holding the opposition off the scoreboard through six innings for the fourth time in six starts.

It's been 19 years since George Brett retired, and he remains the face of the Royals. The George Brett Bridge gets you across Interstate 70 and into Kauffman Stadium, and the .390 Bar and Grill awaits you once you pass by his statue and head through Gate B. It makes sense, too, when you consider the Royals have been baseball's laughingstock the past two decades. They haven't made the playoffs since winning the 1985 World Series, and haven't had a winning season since 2003. Their fans have had little to cheer about after the All-Star break.

First baseman Eric Hosmer stood in one corner of the ballroom. Over near the door stood second baseman Johnny Giavotella, while Lorenzo Cain patrolled the room the way he plans to do the vast center field at Kauffman Stadium. The trio of 20-something Kansas City Royals converged on a suburban convention center Wednesday for the team's annual awards luncheon, but nobody wanted to talk too much about last season. No, those youngsters already have their sights set squarely on the future.

Brian Duensing pitched eight sharp innings and Jason Repko snapped an 0-for-14 skid and drove in three runs, giving the Minnesota Twins a 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday and their first four-game sweep in almost four years. The four-game win streak is a season best for the Twins, who've been struggling with eight players on the disabled list and were missing two of their best players, Justin Morneau and Denard Span, for the second day in a row. Duensing gave up six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his longest outing of the season and avoided becoming the first Twins starter in four years to lose six straight decisions.
