The Kansas Highway Patrol investigates a deadly accident Monday in Elk County. Investigators say a driver was northbound on K-99 about 15 miles south of Howard, drove off the ridge edge of the road and overcorrected. The vehicle rolled and came to rest on its top. The identity of the person killed in the crash has not been released.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of a 1998 Mazda pickup involved in a fatal Pratt County crash on Sunday. The crash happened early in the morning on NE 110th Street, just east of 130th Avenue, or 3 miles east of Preston.  Lazaro Antonio Garcia, 43, was a passenger in the Mazda. He died in the crash. Garcia was from Emporia.   Investigators say the unknown driver lost control on the icy roadway and entered a field on the south side of the road where the vehicle rolled several times.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is inspecting the buses that will take Wichita students to and from school. Photos from the Inspections Troopers started inspecting First Student's 500+ buses at around 7:00 Thursday morning. They're inspecting equipment and mechanical systems on each bus including brakes, steering, fuel systems, mirrors, lights, stop arm and emergency doors and exits. Each bus that passes gets a sticker from KHP. The first day of Wichita Public Schools is Wednesday, August 15, with a half-day orientation for sixth and ninth graders on August 14.

A Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper is in stable condition after being shot during a traffic stop in Hays. It happened on Saturday in the Southeast part of the town. During the stop the driver of the pulled-over vehicle fired on the trooper. The trooper was shot once in the shoulder. The suspect is in custody at the Ellis County Jail. The KBI is investigating the incident.

***THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED, SEE LINK BELOW*** Police say a man impersonating law enforcement pulled a woman over early Saturday morning, but was scared off by a Wichita police officer. The incident happened shortly after 1:00am Saturday, at I-135 & Harry. Click here to see the latest on this story Wichita police say the officer spotted what he thought was a routine traffic stop by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper, and pulled up behind what appeared to be a KHP vehicle to provide backup.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified three people killed in an early morning crash in Ellsworth County.  KHP says 27-year-old Joseph Pena of Corpus Christi, Texas was driving the wrong way on I-70 when he struck another vehicle head-on. Pena was killed in the crash. 20-year-old Kylie Jobe and 22-year-old Kyle Thornburg, both of Wichita, were in the other vehicle. They were both killed. KHP isn't sure who was driving the second vehicle.

If you are accustom to commuting around Wichita chances are you have been bottlenecked in traffic on I-235. The highway has some construction on it and at times drivers are squeezed into one lane.  “If you don't have to go that route avoid it”, says trooper Scott Koehn of the Kansas Highway Patrol. He adds that a lot of drivers are not paying attention to the “no pass zone”…instead they are cutting in long lines of traffic. If caught, violators may have to cut a check starting at $250.

The family of a slain Kansas State Trooper urged a prison review board to keep his killer behind bars and delay the next parole hearing for as long as the law will allow. The wife and children of Ferdinand "Bud" Pribbenow spoke during a public hearing in Wichita Tuesday, more than 30 years after the officer was gunned down in the line of duty. July 11, 1981, Pribbenow stopped a car for traveling 98 mph on the Kansas Turnpike, north of the El Dorado interchange.  As Pribbenow approached, the driver jumped out of the car and opened fire, hitting Pribbenow in the chest and neck.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper is dead after an accident along US 50 near Emporia. According to the KHP crash log, 17-year-old Gumaro Reyes was driving a Dodge Durango that pulled out in front of Trooper Beau Wallace's motorcycle. Wallace was 30 years old.  He was off-duty at the time of the crash. Reyes was not seriously hurt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is on the scene of a semi rollover in Sumner County. KHP says the driver swerved to miss a deer while southbound on Highway 81 near 150th Street South.  The grain hauler truck rolled into a ditch and landed on its side.  The driver wasn't hurt and the deer ran away unharmed. We're told there's a big mess in the area and KHP had to shut down both lanes of traffic for the time being.

One person is dead after a crash involving several cars on the Kansas Turnpike Wednesday morning.  It happened at around 12:30 am on I-35 near Pawnee.  The Kansas Highway Patrol says a school bus was towing another school bus when the attachment came undone, leaving both of the buses disabled in the southbound lane of the Turnpike. KHP says two passenger cars and a semi crashed while trying to avoid those buses. The driver of one of those cars, identified as 60-year-old Donald Putman of Wichita, was killed.

A 59-year-old Smith County man is dead after a crash late Wednesday.  According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, David Beckham of Gaylord, Kansas was headed west on 240th Road when he lost control on a curve near U-281 at around 7:00 pm. KHP says Beckham's Silverado went into a ditch and struck an embankment before coming to rest in a field. He was killed in the crash.  KHP says he was not wearing a seatbelt. Authorities think bitter overnight lows may have contributed to the death of an El Dorado woman. 30-year-old Beth Ann Noffsinger was found dead early Monday morning in a field. The Butler County Sheriff's office says deputies were called to Highway 54 and SE Cattle Pen Road for the report of a missing person around 12:45 Monday morning.  The victim's fiance was in his car parked in the area.  He said he drove to the area with Noffisnger, but then she became disoriented and got out of the car and started running.  He told officials he doesn't know why she left.

A 16-year-old girl from Syracuse, Kansas is dead after a one-vehicle crash in Hamilton County Sunday evening.  The one-vehicle crash happened around 9:30 pm on Barton Road in Syracuse.  The Kansas Highway Patrol says the 1999 Suburban with six teenagers inside was headed south on a gravel road when the vehicle started to fishtail.  KHP says the driver over-corrected sending the SUV into a ditch, where it landed on it roof. 16-year-old Laura Leyva-Perez was thrown from the vehicle and killed.  The driver was a 16-year-old male, and there were four other passengers, all 14-year-old males.

Kansas outlawed texting while driving last year, but officials are going an extra mile to make sure everyone knows the law. A proclamation signed by Gov. Sam Brownback designated Wednesday as "No Text on Board Pledge Day. " The Kansas Department of Transportation planned to flash messages on electronic billboards along state roads reminding drivers not to text behind the wheel. Brownback's office says a recent study that found people who text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash.

Wichita police say they'll review protocol after an officer thought a Sedgwick County Deputy was a fake Kansas Highway Patrol trooper. The officer pulled behind what he thought was a KHP vehicle which was involved in a traffic stop.  The officer contacted KHP to determine if a trooper was involved in a stop in the area, but they said no.  The officer did not check to see if it was a Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy, which it was. ...
