Growing up on a family farm and ranch near Ellsworth, it was easy to see how weather affected almost every aspect of agriculture and how important it was for us to know what kind of weather was on the horizon. Ross started attending storm spotter training classes with his dad while he was still in middle school because he wanted to learn more about thunderstorms.

The Schurz Communications Board of Directors, parent company of KWCH 12, has approved $500,000 in funding for improvements to the KBSL antenna in Goodland. KBSL was off the air for four days in July when equipment on the 50-year-old tower failed. Engineers diagnosed the problem and temporary repairs were made. However, we have only been able to broadcast at half-power since the summer. Due to the age of the antenna and a lack of parts being available, we determined that a total antenna replacement was the only viable option. We have chosen a new antenna and have placed an order for it. Replacing the antenna requires us to modify the current tower to support the new equipment and make sure it meets current industry and federal standards for wind and ice. This modification will be done at the same time as the antenna installation.

Monday morning's cool temps, clear skies and light winds are making way for a couple of summer-like days this afternoon and again Tuesday. Look for sunshine and a few high clouds both days with afternoon highs in the mid-80s. Wednesday a strong storm system will pass by Kansas to our north dragging a cold front through our region. The front will bring some passing sprinkles or rain showers, gusty northerly winds and colder temperatures. Afternoon highs Wednesday will fall into 60s and 70s then tumble into the even cooler 50s and 60s Thursday and Friday.

Just wanted to remind you that CBS and KWCH will be airing Wednesday's presidential debate at 8pm. And so will who knows how many other channels....which will no doubt cause people to question why the same thing has to be on so many channels at the same time. I guess the simplest reason is that each of the networks prides itself on being a reliable source of news and current events. Neither of them wants to be seen as dropping the ball by carrying sit-coms or reality shows while others are providing something "important" like the debate.
