Last weekend, KWCH aired an infomercial paid for by the National Rifle Association. As you might guess, we've had some calls complaining about the content of the show. Here is the response from KWCH president and general manager Joan Barrett. Thank you for your comments regarding the NRA 30 minute paid commercial announcement. As a commercial television station we accept many commercial announcements of various lengths that offer products and services as well as differing views of multiple topics.

A Kingman man accused of killing his wife and setting their house on fire is in court this week as attorneys argue several motions. Brett Seacat is charged in the death of his wife, Vashti. On the first day of the motions hearing Tuesday, lawyers argued motions covering everything from statements Vashti Seacat made to co-workers, to her mental health before her death. Brett seacat was in the courtroom for the hearing, so were members of his family and Vashti's family.

The summer has some local vegetable growers smiling over what's sprouting up. Much of that is thanks to Mother Nature who has been kind to gardens so far. It's quite a contrast to last year, when extreme heat and drought took a toll. Don Wells of Mulvane is nearing 80-years old but nothing stops him from his daily routine. "Oh it's very peaceful, I love it out here". His daily plan involves coming out to his garden every morning at to check on all of the different vegetables he has growing.

It's another first, KWCH is launching a new service making it possible to reach more people. Starting Friday June 15, 2012 one of our broadcasts will be available on computers, smart phones and tablets. It's called Mobile DTV and we're the first station in Wichita to do it. On a 4th grade field trip, Chad Cross toured a television station and watched what happens behind the scenes to produce a live newscast. In awe of it all, he decided on his career that day. Today, Chad is News Director at KWCH. “It was the 'magic of TV' that inspired me then. Now, it's about the responsibility we have as journalists to ask questions, hold the powerful accountable and use our medium to make a difference in the community,” he said. “It's also about our service to viewers, relaying vital information for their safety, especially when there's severe weather in Kansas.” Chad has been at KWCH since 2002, producing coverage of major events like the tornado that destroyed the town of Greensburg, the capture of Wichita's “BTK” serial killer, and the Jayhawks' 2008 national championship. He's proud of the award-winning news produced at KWCH, including national and regional Edward R. Murrow awards, 2011 Kansas Assoc.

On Saturday, June 9 th , Eyewitness Sports Reporter Heather Williams received two 2012 Heart of America Awards. The awards were given from the KC Press Club Society of Professional Journalists in recognition of “the best journalism by the best journalists in Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas”. Williams' two awards include a silver in the online Blog category for “The Backstretch Blog” which is a regularly updated blog on KWCH.com. She also won a bronze in Small Market sports for “Clint Bowyer's Racing Roots”.

History: KWCH was the first television station in Kansas and began broadcasting on July 1st, 1953 under the call letters KTVH Channel 12. The station was licensed to and broadcast from Hutchinson, Kansas about 45 miles northwest of Wichita. In 1956 station facilities were moved to the current location on 37th St. North in Wichita. In 1983, KTVH call letters changed to KWCH and ownership was consolidated with three other Kansas stations in the market. These satellite stations include KBSD in Dodge City, KBSH in Hays, and KBSL in Goodland.
