Members of the Kansas congressional delegation were among those who attended a celebration in Winfield Thursday. The event marked the $26.6 million expansion of the Rubbermaid facility. It also included the groundbreaking of a neighboring 500,000 square foot distribution facility. " Any NFL football game, when you see it has a gatorade cooler on it was something that was made here in Winfield, Kansas," said Newell Rubbermaid CEO Michael Polk. Rubbermaid announced the facility's expansion in late 2011 saying 200 jobs would be relocated from Texas.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback toured Reading Monday morning from the air and on the ground. One person died, five were hurt and hundreds of homes and businesses were either damaged or destroyed by an EF-3 tornado Saturday night. Brownback first went up in a helicopter to get a big picture view of the damage. 110 homes were hit, 56 destroyed. Ten businesses were also destroyed. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Don Chesmore who was killed when a tornado hit his mobile home Saturday night and with the many Kansans affected by the violent storms this weekend,” Governor Brownback said. “Lt.

The decision on whether Boeing or European plane-maker EADS will build the Air Force's next generation refueling tanker could come at anytime. Both companies want to supply the Air Force with an initial order of 179 tankers, with the possibility of hundreds more in the future. The plane-makers are supposed to submit their final bids to the Air Force by Friday. The contract is worth at least $35-40 billion dollars. This week, Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, urging him to consider the implications for Kansas and national security in making the decision.

Just days after a shooting in Arizona killed six, and injured 14, including a congress woman, security for lawmakers has become an issue. Some contemplate adding a plexi-glass wall in the House gallery. Some want more gun laws. Some say they'll carry guns when in their home district. "It's not something you expect," said former Kansas congressman Todd Tiahrt Saturday, "hundreds of times I was in the position she was in and apparently just as vulnerable. Freshman congressman Mike Pompeo from Kansas' Fourth District has been named to two subcommittees of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Officials with Pompeo's office say he will serve on the Subcommittee on Energy and Power and the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade. According to Pompeo's office, the Energy and Power subcommittee deals with issues including national energy policy, renewable resources, energy regulation, utility issues and even regulation of nuclear facilities.

New members of Congress are heading to Washington, and Kansas is sending THREE of them. Mike Pompeo's staff opened up a temporary office in Wichita on Tuesday. The newly-elected Congressman, along with Tim Huelskamp and the other freshmen finished orientation recently. Kevin Yoder will represent the second district. They went through classes on how to set up their district offices, they took a group photo, and also chose an office in the Capitol.

Twenty months on the campaign trail, and finally Mike Pompeo gets a break, sort of. “A small breath and then we're right back at it,” says Pompeo. The clock is ticking. “You have 60 days to build your team and get ready.” But Pompeo has an advantage. He has help from someone who knows Washington and how to build a congressional office. He will fill the seat Congressman Todd Tiahrt has held since 1995. The two are working together to make the transition smooth.
