All-America forward Doug McDermott says he'll return to Creighton for his senior year instead of declaring for the NBA draft. McDermott made the announcement Thursday at a news conference in Creighton's practice gym. He was joined by his father, Bluejays coach Greg McDermott, and teammates. Doug McDermott was the second-leading scorer in Division I last season, averaging 23.2 points. He led the Bluejays to a sweep of the Missouri Valley regular-season and tournament titles in their last year in the conference.

Communities across Kansas will have special events this weekend to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. One of the centerpiece events will be Saturday in Anthony, home of the state's official 9/11 memorial. A memorial in the town about 60 miles south of Wichita contains a stone from the Pentagon, steel from the World Trade Center and soil from Pennsylvania where an aircraft hijacked by terrorists was forced down by passengers. Other events include activities at Topeka's Forbes Field to honor first responders and emergency personnel for their service.

The Kansas City Chiefs will hold a news conference Tuesday morning to answer questions fans and the media have about a variety of topics including the practice schedule, drafting new players, the new NFL agreement reached between players and the league, and the upcoming season now that the NFL lockout is over. Markieff Morris was born seven minutes ahead of twin brother Marcus. He was first in the NBA, too, selected by the Phoenix Suns at No. 13 overall, five minutes before the Houston Rockets made Marcus the No. 14 pick. Markieff was in sweltering Phoenix on Friday, introduced at a news conference at US Airways Center with his mother, Angel, beaming from the front row. The 6-foot-9, 245-pound power forward says he will miss playing alongside his brother, as the pair did at Kansas, but he smiled while noting that Steve Nash would be an upgrade as a teammate.

A person familiar with the situation says North Carolina State will name Mark Gottfried as its next men's basketball coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has yet to make a formal announcement. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Gottfried was in his 11th season as head coach at Alabama when he resigned in January 2009. He also spent three seasons as head coach at Murray State. Gottfried replaces Sidney Lowe, who resigned last month after five seasons.

Kansas' Attorney General will unveil an ongoing operation targeting the distribution of online child pornography. Steve Six's office says the news conference is set for this morning at 9:30 in Topeka. He will discuss a number of convictions and pending cases that have come from Operation Child Shield. Governor Mark Parkinson joins a group of U.S. governors at a news conference in Washington, D.C. Wednesday afternoon. They were talking about the need for a federal extension of enhanced payments for Medical Assistance (FMAP). They also discussed the impact on state budgets and jobs if the aide is not made available. More than 30 states will have to make drastic budtet cuts without the FMAP extension.
