Attorneys for the NFL have wrapped up their meeting with the federal judge overseeing court-ordered mediation. The session with U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan lasted for about five hours Wednesday. Lawyers for the locked-out players met with him for about four hours on Tuesday. Both sides will sit down with Boylan on Thursday for the first talks since the collective bargaining agreement expired on March 11. The NFL says commissioner Roger Goodell and some of the owners will attend.

The Detroit Lions must forfeit their seventh-round pick in this year's draft after Commissioner Roger Goodell ruled they tampered with players under contract to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010. Detroit must also swap fifth-round picks with Kansas City, leaving the Lions with the 23rd pick of that round instead of the ninth. The league says the Lions commented publicly to the media about their desire to acquire players under contract with the Chiefs and had impermissible contact with a player - or his agent - under contract with the Chiefs.

ESPN is reporting that Eric Berry, the 5th overall pick in this year's NFL draft, has signed a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.  ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the deal is worth a maximum of $60 million with $34 million in guaranteed money over 6 years. The Chiefs have yet to make an announcement and a spokesman for the team said until they do so nothing is official. However, Berry basically announced the deal over his Twitter account this morning saying:  "'Bout to head to St. Joe.  AKA the deal is done!"

Well, we don't...if by WE you mean the local folks here at KWCH-12. As we've said mAny times, the NFL coverage is controlled by CBS in New York. It's generally not a problem for what the network considers our "local" team, the Kansas City Chiefs. But during other games, CBS controll will sometimes make a switch during the game for their own reasons.  It can be frustrating, I know, but please understand that the local folks can only show you what we're getting from CBS. There is no magical switch, button, or lever we can use to send you the game you want.

Former All-Pro linebacker Mike Vrabel is retiring from the Kansas City Chiefs and returning to his alma mater as an Ohio State assistant coach. Vrabel confirmed Monday morning the end of his 14-year career and that he had taken the job as linebackers coach with the Buckeyes. The position was previously held by his college roommate and teammate, Luke Fickell, who was elevated to interim head coach when Jim Tressel resigned May 30. Vrabel played for Pittsburgh and New England before closing out his career with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs have spent extra time this week focusing on protecting the football. Kansas City leads the NFL with 15 turnovers, and its eight fumbles lost are double the next-worst team in the AFC. The Chiefs have a minus-13 differential, and all that wrapped together is a big reason why they've lost three of their first four games. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel spent a portion of practice Wednesday focused entirely on wrapping up the ball after a particularly disastrous game last Sunday.

Tyler Palko's dream is about to come true at what may be the worst possible time for Kansas City. The 28-year-old journeyman, who was passed up by every NFL team in the 2007 draft and once got cut by the UFL's California Redwoods, gets his first NFL start on Monday night against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. He got the nod when Matt Cassel underwent surgery this week on his throwing hand. If Cassel is out for the season, Palko could have seven games to prove his worth to a Kansas City team that has been devastated by injury.

On the third day of the NFL draft Wichita area athletes continue to get picked up by NFL teams. Wichita Northwest alum and former Kansas State wide receiver Chris Harper was the first Wichitan to be taken on Saturday.  He was picked up by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round with the 123rd overall pick. Wichita Southeast alum and former Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle went next.  He was picked up in the fifth round by the Dallas Cowboys.  Randle's selection means 2013 is the year with the most Wichitans selected in the draft.

Former Butler Community College defensive end Cornelius 'Tank' Carradine was taken by the San Francisco 49'ers with the 40th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.  Carradine graduated from Butler and went on to play for the Florida State Seminoles. Carradine is listed as 6'4, 276 lbs.  It was questionable how high Carradine would go considering he blew out his ACL during his 2012 season finale game with the 'Noles.  San Francisco traded down with Tennessee giving them the 40th overall pick.  In return the 49'ers picked up the Titan's 7th round draft choicse for this season and a thrid-round pick next year.

If there is a specific NFL team interested in drafting Arthur Brown Thursday night, he isn't aware of them. "Honestly, I can't gauge different interest from different teams - who has more, so to speak," Brown said at his parent's home Wednesday afternoon. "As far as I know from my end, everything is going well. " The former K-State linebacker and Wichita-East standout is projected by some NFL Draft experts to go as early as late in the first round or early in the second round.

Kicking a football has been Anthony Cantelle's job for the past four years, first a soccer ball and now a football. The aim is to make it his profession for the next ten years or so in the NFL. Cantelle is one of seven kickers in the draft pool for Thursday's NFL Draft. "I never thought I'd be in this situation, so I'm kind of soaking it all in," Cantele said at Kapaun Mt. Carmel high school where he played prep football. "It's unreal when coaches from NFL teams are calling you and asking you to work and asking you to send film.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been on the clock since the end of last season. The Chiefs went 2-14 to land the No. 1 choice in the NFL draft for the first time in franchise history. But there's no clear-cut player available this year, and certainly no star quarterback such as Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III to make the pick an easy one. Kansas City is likely going to shore up its offensive line with the selection Thursday night. Most draft experts believe the Chiefs will go with Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel or Central Michigan's Eric Fisher, a pair of left tackles who could protect quarterback Alex Smith.
