Founded by the Mennonite church in 1954, Prairie View is the state's largest private behavioral and mental health system guided by a strong tradition of Christian caring and is private and not-for-profit. Prairie View offers a complete range of services for children, adolescents, adults, older adults and families including treatment for depression and anxiety disorders, addictions and substance abuse. Recovery is supported with vocational and housing assistance, in Community Mental Health Center areas; individual, family and group counseling services.

As part of Prairie View's commitment to continuous improvement in services, we ask those we serve to indicate the effectiveness of and satisfaction with their treatment at Prairie View. Here is what we have learned: More than nine out of 10 patients would recommend    Prairie View to family or friends. More than four out of five adolescents report they are    coping better after treatment at Prairie View. Nearly eight out of 10 adults report that their treatment in    the hospital has been helpful in preparing them to resume    their usual roles outside of the home, such as work or school.

Prairie View offers a full range of services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults. More than 250 qualified mental health professionals provide services focused on one goal-preservation of the family. Therefore, Prairie View staff work with the patient and family, as well as community agencies, referral sources and any others involved to address each person's specific needs.

If you or your loved one exhibits dangerous behavior to self or others, therapy/medications have not worked, the ability to function in daily role has diminished or psychotic behavior is noticed, admission may be granted. The person must be medically stable in order to be admitted to Prairie View's inpatient unit. Prairie View serves as the community mental health center for Harvey, Marion and McPherson counties. For residents in those counties, sliding scale fees are available. Most major medical insurance programs - Medicaid, Medicare and Tricare - cover the cost for services at Prairie View. Prairie View has provided evaluation and treatment services for adults and older adults for more than 50 years and recognizes the experiences, values, challenges and physical changes that come in life.    Treating the Whole Person Our program treats the whole person - physically, psychologically and spiritually.  A team of specialists, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health workers and nurses, works with the adult, family and caregiver, if necessary, to develop a treatment plan based on each person's individual needs.

On March 15, 1954, 19 staff persons, most of whom were voluntary service workers, opened the doors of Prairie View with a vision of caring for the needs of persons with mental illnesses with dignity, respect and the highest standards of care. Since its beginning, Prairie View staff has stressed the importance of quality with economy, such as moving patients from the inpatient hospital to less restrictive treatment options like partial hospitalization, group therapy and outpatient treatment as soon as possible.

Older Adults and Depression By Amy Ibbetson, LMLP, Prairie View The myth about older adults and depression: Older adults are more likely than young adults to feel more depressed. Actually, studies show that older adults have lower rates of major depression and many other psychiatric disorders than do younger adults. The wisdom that comes with age:   It is believed that older adults tend to be better equipped to handle life stressors and setbacks than young adults.
