Wichita police take an eight-year-old boy into protective custody after he was found home alone. Now, police want to talk with his parents. Police were called to an apartment complex in the 4200 block of S. Hydraulic Sunday evening after someone became concerned about the boy. According to police, the boy told them his parents frequently left him alone to go to the casino. As of this morning, police had not yet interviewed the parents. No word on whether any arrests will be made.

Two Wichita boys are in protective custody after police find them living in a filthy home with no electricity. Police were called to check the welfare of the kids in a home in the 400 block of N. Kansas. When they showed up, officers found a seven-year-old walking in the street. He told police his mom locked him out of the house and left with his brother. "He just came walking through here crying his eyes out, wanting his mom," said Shannon Meyer, who works near the home.

Wichita police take a 16-year-old into protective custody after finding her living in a home with nearly 80 cats. A Wichita school counselor reported the case to the SRO because they were concerned the girl was living in unsanitary living conditions because she reeked of cat urine. An officer went to the home and made contact with the girl's mother and immediately called in help from other officers because of the strong odor of urine. Fire crews were also called in to help with respirators.

A three-year-old girl is in protective custody after police found her and two adults asleep in a car in the Chuck E. Cheese parking lot Sunday afternoon. The two adults were high on heroin. Wichita police say a concerned citizen called them at around 4:15 Sunday afternoon. When police showed up, they found two adults, 31 and 22, and a three-year-old girl. asleep in the car. The officer woke them up and found that the adults were under the influence of heroin, which they had used while the youngster was in the car with them.

Wichita police took five children into protective custody from a south Wichita home Wednesday afternoon. Police say staff at Colvin Elementary noticed severe bruising on an 8-year-old student and called police. Investigators say the boy had been beaten with a belt by a relative. Because of safety concerns, officers also removed 6, 4, 3 and 2-year-old children from the home. The other children are all females. Police know who the suspect is. They say he is a relative, but doesn't live in the home.

Two children, 11 and 12 years old, are in police protective custody after they were found living in a home that was infested with cockroaches. Police were tipped off about the youngsters in SW Wichita. Police tell us the home was dirty and infested with bugs and officers deemed it unlivable. The children were in the care of a 48-year-old guardian. The case is being handled by the Kansas Department of Children and Families and the Exploited and Missing Child Unit.

A Wichita boy is in protective custody after shooting himself with a BB gun. The shooting happened Wednesday November 28th in the 1700 block of north Minneapolis. Some neighbors say that it's all a big misunderstanding. "I guess they were playing around, they were hiding in the closet and Zeke, that's the dude that had the BB gun and he shot it, trying to shoot at the wall," says Tiane Hoy, a neighbor. The 12-year-old boy accidently shot himself in the head with the BB gun after it ricocheted off the wall.

Wichita police take seven youngsters into protective custody after finding them living in filthy conditions. Staff at Linwood Elementary reported the situation after noticing two students with what they described as extreme hygiene issues. Officers went to the home where they found no electricity, bug infestation and extreme filth. "Our goal is never to take kids out of a home unless we have to," says Lt. Doug Nolte. Seven minors, ranging in age from three to 15, were taken into protective custody.

Wichita police are investigating after finding a three-year-old boy wandering around early Thursday morning in S. Wichita. A woman was passing by the area near Beech and Mt. Vernon when she noticed the youngster, who was wearing Spongebob pajamas. The boy couldn't tell her where he lived. A few hours later, police got a call from a woman who said the boy was staying with her and wandered off through the back door after she put him down for bed last night. Police say the woman provides overnight care for children, but they aren't sure if she's a licensed day care provider. Police don't believe it is a case of neglect and the boy was not hurt, but they are still investigating. The boy is in protective custody, though police have been in contact with the boy's parents.
