The Reno County Courthouse is 80 years old.  The law enforcement center next door, 40.  But there's a week old gadget that's safeguarding both buildings.       It is a computer-camera-and-phone combined.  An inmate sits in front of a monitor in the holding area.  To activate the program, (s)he picks up the phone connected to the computer monitor, and communicates with Judge Joe McCarville -- who has his own microphone and big-screen tv in his courtroom.       "I hope that by using this for the things that we can, " said the Hon. McCarville, "we can free up the officers and make it easier for them on the kind of hearings we have to have with the inmate in person.

Weeks after he was hurt in a crash, Reno County Deputy Mitch Harris is released from the hospital.   Harris is now at Wesley Rehab Center.  He's expected to be there for at least three weeks. Harris was hurt in September when he turned in front of a pickup on K-96 while responding to another accident. Two people in the pickup were also hurt, but not as seriously. ----------------------- Update, September 19 Looking at the pictures, it's hard to believe anyone survived.

A woman is flown to a Wichita hospital for treatment after a crash in Reno County.  It happened around 6 pm Monday evening at 43rd and Kent Road in Reno County. Police tell us a 2011 Toyota failed to yield to a westbound 2005 Hyundai, sending the car into a barbed-wire fence. A passenger in that car was pinned inside.  She was removed from the car and flown to Wichita's St. Francis Hospital for treatment. Police tell us everyone in the car was buckled up. No one else was seriously hurt.

Authorities in Reno County believe alcohol may have been a factor in an early morning crash that sent one person to the hospital. It happened around 2:00 Wednesday morning.  Authorities tell us the 36-year-old driver from Haven was headed east on Red Rock Road near Mayfield Road whens he swerved to miss something in the road and rolled her 2003 Chevy Suburban into a ditch. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, but her injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

The man accused of breaking into several Reno county homes could be in court as early as Tuesday to hear the charges against him. The Reno County attorney's office filed 17 counts against Tom Goin, including multiple burglary and theft charges. Deputies arrested Goin last week when an investigator saw a suspicious car in the area. Goin led deputies on a chase through north and west Hutchinson. They eventually found him hiding in a bush.

A 28-year-old Abbeyville man is dead after his truck was struck by a train in Reno County on Saturday. Reno County authorities tell us the crash happened around 2:00 Saturday afternoon at K-61 and Sterling.  Bronc Kraft was headed south on Sterling Road in a truck pulling two stock trailers.  Police say didn't stop at a railroad intersection, and his truck was struck by an eastbound train.  Kraft jumped from the truck before the...

She's charged with reckless second degree murder. Monday, a Reno County mother pleaded not guilty in the death of her 3-month-old daughter. Details released during a preliminary hearing in February, revealed that Brigit Hippen used a hair dryer to warm up the child overnight, fell asleep, then woke up to find the child dead. Doctors say her core temperature was 108 degrees. No new court date was set.

A pedestrian is injured after a hit and run in northern Reno County. It happened early Sunday morning in the 1600 block of west 56th street. When authorities arrived at the scene they found that there was a large party for an individual going overseas at a nearby residence. 23-year-old Matt Price of Hutchinson was in the area where vehicles were parked just west of the party site. Price was struck by a vehicle. Authorities say he sustained major injuries. The vehicle fled the scene.

A Great Bend man is recovering in a Wichita hospital after his motorcycle struck a deer in Reno County Thursday evening. The Reno County Sheriff's office says it happened just before 7:00 Thanksgiving Day around a half-mile east of Sylvia Road on West 4th Avenue.  The 39-year-old motorcycle rider was headed home toward Great Bend when a deer hopped into the road.  The rider tried to stop, but ended up hitting the deer and wrecking his motorcycle. ...
