The Kansas Department of Revenue has seized the assets of a Hays restaurant for failing to pay sales tax. The Hays Daily News reports Professor's Steakhouse and Saloon closed this week. Red signs posted on the building stated the property had been seized and is in the possession of the state of Kansas. According to the Kansas State Department of Revenue, the restaurant had two warrants totaling $68,262.76. The state usually closes a restaurant and takes over assets when back taxes are owed and after department personnel have tried to work with the party to resolve the issue.

A popular restaurant in Los Angeles is getting praise and criticism for calling out some would-be patrons on Twitter. Red Medicine restaurant's official Twitter account sent the tweets, naming people who didn't show up for their reservations Saturday. The first tweet in the series read: "Hi Kyle Anderson (323), I hope you enjoyed your gf's bday and the flowers that you didn't bring when you no-showed for your 815 res. Thanks. " The tweet was sent by the restaurant's manager.

New restaurant regulations that were supposed to require chains with more than 20 locations to list calorie counts on their menus are stalled. But many restaurants have already started disclosing that information anyway. Consumer Reports wanted to see whether restaurant-goers are getting a good count. Consumer Reports chose 17 menu offerings at a dozen casual restaurants and fast- food chains and compared their nutritional claims with reality. They included restaurants such as IHOP, Red Lobster, Cheese Cake Factory, and McDonald's.

One of Kansas' most popular places is shutting down after almost 50 years in business. The cooks at Miller's Five Drive In, flipped the last burgers and swirled the last ice-cream cones. For the last 49 years, workers at Miller's Five Drive in have dressed many a burger. But Sunday was their last. Miller's Five is closed for business but not for the reason most would think. "I had chemo Thursday and I just decided I was done," said owner Judy Miller. Miller has liver and lung cancer. She opened Miller's when she was 18-years- old. At 66 she says, she just can't do it any longer.

Some of the ten Taco Tico restaurants closed this week will reopen. The Kansas Department of Revenue says the Wichita based business Ajax International Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Under the bankruptcy, the company will work to pay back taxes owed to the state. The company owes $434,939 in unpaid sales taxes accumulated between June 2011 and October 2012. The Department of Revenue seized all bank accounts, on-site cash and other assets at ten restaurants Tuesday. The state says it made several attempts to recover the money before closing the restaurants.

Six Wichita-area Taco Ticos have been closed for failing to pay state sales tax. Jeannine Koranda, Kansas Deptartment Of Revenue spokeswoman, said the state seized the restaurants' assets Tuesday. Other locations in Derby, Arkansas City, Topeka and Dodge City also closed. Officers seized all known bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and personal property assets belonging to owner Mohmood M. Karim. The state issued two warrants claiming a total of $434,939.23 in lost sales tax. The closed locations include: 929 N. Broadway 1303 N. Tyler 2515 S. Seneca 416 N. West St. 3257 E. Harry 11333 E. Central Koranda said closing a business is a last resort after collection attempts, tax liens, previous bank levies and on-site till taps are executed to bring the taxpayer into compliance have been exhausted.

A fire destroys the Paradise Grill in Burrton Sunday night. Police Chief David Becker tells us someone noticed smoke coming from the building around 8:30. Fire crews put the fire out, but the business is destroyed. Chief Becker says the family restaurant closed down for the day at six o'clock, and no one was in the building. Crews are staying on scene overnight. The fire marshall will be on scene Monday morning to investigate the cause of the fire.

"It surprised me," Phyllis Harmon says. "Why would somebody do that?" Phyllis Harmon wonders why somebody would plant a hidden camera inside the women's restroom at a Braum's restaurant. "All I can think of is, they got to be a little sick-minded, and somewhat crazy, and maybe a pervert," Harmon says. A Braum's employee called police Thursday night after finding a pinhole camera in the women's bathroom. Around nine o'clock the employee found the camera taped inside a bathroom stall.

A fire damaged the T-Bones restaurant in Hays Tuesday morning. Firefighters were concerned the fire could spread into the other businesses that share the same building. Help was brought in from the rural Ellis and Victoria fire departments. One firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor burn injury. Several adjacent businesses received smoke damage and damage as firefighters opened concealed spaces to stop fire from spreading. There is no word yet on a cause.

Dodge City commissioners approve a new sales tax incentive for a new restaurant. The developers of an IHOP requested to become a Community Improvement District. The incentive allows the business to charge a one-cent higher sales tax to help pay for the development. Although the incentive won unanimous approval, some Dodge City commissioners voiced concerns about whether the franchise really needed the financial help. Dodge City's mayor said there has been a struggle to bring businesses to the area.
