Authorities in Butler County want residents to keep an eye on their mailboxes. Since the first of the year, the sheriff's office has had 18 reports of mail theft. In 2012, there were 56 mail thefts for the entire year. Thieves are taking anything where they can make an identity theft. The Butler County Sheriff says it started earlier in the month north of Rose Hill. It's moved north of Andover towards the Benton and Towanda area. Sheriff Kelly Herzet says the best advice he can give people is to get your mail as soon as you can. Anyone who sees anything suspicious is asked to call 911.

A Rose Hill Eagle Scout is now a member of an even more elite group of Boy Scouts. He's one of fewer than 200 scouts nationwide to have earned all the merit badges possible while he was a scout. In Jeremy Ebert's case that's 134 badges. So many they won't all fit on his sash. The Scouts don't award merit badges to anyone over 18-years-old. That presented a challenge to Ebert who only had 30 merit badges by the time he was fifteen. He was inspired to complete the quest by a special presentation from fellow Eagle Scout Mike Rowe, of Dirty Jobs fame. Now Ebert hopes to pass that passion on. "The purpose of me doing all this, was mainly to incite others to either follow in my footsteps or get a little more excited about scouting as a whole," said Ebert.

Rose Hill is getting some new sidewalks and that's good news for children who walk to and from school every day. The City of Rose Hill has received a $250,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to add new sidewalks through neighborhoods near the school campus. "We're very excited about this, said City Administrator Kathy Raney. It's the third time Rose Hill applied for the state money and this time it was granted. The plan is to add sidewalks on Warren Avenue and Bentwood Dr. that connect from Silknetter to School St. The change will mean safer trips to and from school for children who walk or ride bikes.

If Rose Hill pet owners don't perform their duty and pick up their dog's doodie, they could be fined. Earlier this month, the City of Rose Hill passed an animal excrement ordinance. The intent is to get pet owners to pick up after their dogs on public rights of way, public property or private property. "It's a quality of life issue," said City Administrator Kathy Raney. To help with compliance the city has placed about a dozen pet waste stations around the city. Some are along Rose Hill Road and others are set up along walking trails near the city pond.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is issued a public health advisory for Eight Mile Creek in Butler and Cowley counties. Samples of the water have been submitted for testing. The City of Rose Hill's main wastewater pump station shut down Sunday, June 24, due to equipment failure. This caused a release of untreated wastewater to a tributary of Eight Mile Creek. The City of Rose Hill was able to restart the pump station and stop the release of wastewater. The health advisory extends through the portion of Eight Mile Creek from Southwest Butler Road north of Rose Hill in Butler County to where the creek enters the Walnut River in Cowley County.

Annette Cook spent days sifting through what was left of her house after an August propane explosion demolished everything she owned. “It looked like a bomb went off, rubble and ash everywhere,” Cook said. The only two things she recovered were probably the most sentimental. Her dad's Air Force memorial flag and her grandfather's Purple Heart, reminders of her proud heritage of military service and sacrifice. “It barely resembles a Purple Heart anymore,” said Cook.
