"We're in control now. " That's the message from Deputies at the Sedgwick County Jail. The Sheriff's Department is cracking down on things like graffiti and vandalism. Sedgwick County Undersheriff Danny Bardezbain showed us how it's moving forward with changes aimed at running at tighter ship. Bardezbain says inmates wrote on walls with pencils provided by the jail. Courts require writing utensils to be available to inmates so they can communicate with their attorneys. Now, the jail will only provide flexible pencils which won't damage the walls.

Two Sedgwick County Deputies were presented with Carnegie Medals for their actions in August of 2011. Deputy Thomas Delgado and Deputy Joseph Page pulled a 65-year-old Wichita man out of a burning pickup truck on August 31st, 2011. Authorities say the driver suffered a medical condition while driving and motor assist vehicle near 63rd S. and Broadway, then another vehicle...then ran into a bridge and caught fire near MacArthur. Deputies Delgado and Page pulled the man to safety, injuring themselves in the process.

A Sedgwick County inmate is facing additional charges after he is accused of attacking a deputy with a food tray. KFDI reports the dispute began when a 19-year-old man grabbed an extra tray from the meal line Monday night. A deputy asked the inmate to put the tray back, and return to his cell. The inmate refused, picked up his juice, and threw it in the deputy's face. Authorities said the inmate then began hitting the deputy in the head with the food tray. Other deputies saw the food tray fight and managed to handcuff the inmate.

An effort to raise money for an injured Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputy is coming together. Wives of other officers hope to help the family cover expenses during the deputy's recovery. His name has not been released, but we know he's a five year veteran of the department. He was shot after a chase March 11th that ended in Butler County. The deputy sustained eye injuries. The suspect was also shot by Kansas Highway Patrol. He is now out of the hospital in in jail.

UPDATE: A woman has been charged for her role in connection to shooting a Sedgwick County deputy. Prosecutors charged Clara Crosser with three counts of attempted first-degree murder. She was arrested Monday evening after a 33-year-old deputy was shot in the eye. The shooting happened after a chase in Butler County. Crosser also faces seven additional charges related to the chase and shooting incident. She is charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal threat, attempt to flee and elude, burglary, possession of methamphetamine and criminal damage to property.

The events that led-up to Monday night's chase and shooting are marked in court documents and Jason Perez's criminal background. Jason Perez was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on Attempted First Degree Murder charges on Wednesday. He had been hospitalized since being shot during the incident on Monday. November 2012, Perez was sentenced in Johnson County on felony criminal theft and drug charges. Fifteen days later, he was released from jail. The Johnson County Department of Corrections said he was sentenced to serve 12 months probation, with several conditions.

A Sedgwick County deputy is out of the hospital after being shot in the eye Monday night. The 33-year-old deputy was released from Wesley Wednesday morning. We now have in the deputy's own words, what happened in the moments after the shooting. Below is part of a transcript from Radioreference.com Deputy: "Shots fired shots fired" Dispatcher: "I have an officer in trouble, shots fired in Butler County, NW 70th street at K-196, off at traffic pursuit, operate patrol" Supervisor: "To the officer, where are you hit at and keep talking to us" Deputy: "Uh, I can't see out of my right eye".

A Sedgwick County deputy is recovering at the hospital this morning. He's now listed in fair condition. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter and Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet are holding a press conference to release more information about the shooting. Investigators worked through the night to sort out the details. We do know the man who shot the deputy was also shot by officers. He's in critical condition and is being guarded at the hospital. A woman was also taken into custody.

Months after being artificially inseminated, one of two Amur Tigers at the Sedgwick County Zoo gives birth. Unfortunately, the cub only lived a day and a half. The cub was born on February 24th and marked the first-ever birth of an Amur Tiger at the Sedgwick County Zoo and the first cub for its mother, Talali. Talali was artificially inseminated back in November. The zoo says the cub appeared vigorous at birth and was being cared for by its mother, but passed away just 36 hours after birth.

Just 4.7% of registered voters turned out for Tuesday's primary election. That's compared with 2011 which has a low of 7.75%. Election officials knew the turnout was going to be low because there weren't a lot of heated races. They also say weather was a factor in keeping some voters home. Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman says the polling place at the Sedgwick Co. Zoo only had five voters through the entire day. She says it is a shame that more people didn't get out and vote, since the poll workers worked so hard to make sure polling places were open and clear of snow.
