Following their second 2-14 finish in five seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly fired head coach Romeo Crennel. ESPN reported the firing on Monday, adding that general manager Scott Pioli would not be dismissed according to sources. Crennel took over for Todd Haley on an interim basis and coached the final three games of the 2011 campaign, with Kansas City winning two of those contests. He was then given the job full time following the season. Coming off that 7-9 campaign, the Chiefs lost their first two games and then dropped eight in a row from Sept.

This was not the dying moment of an ugly loss. This was a feel-good charity softball game in the middle of the summer, for heaven's sake, when everybody was feeling happy and upbeat. Still the boos rained down on poor Matt Cassel. A few weeks earlier, in another sign of the little regard so many in Kansas City seem to have for their quarterback, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt had publicly announced, seemingly with glee, that the team hoped to sign free agent Peyton Manning. It's been the offseason of disrespect for Cassel, the summer of indignity.

Kyle Orton will start at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday unless an injured finger on his throwing hand prevents him from playing. Interim coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday that he made the change in an effort to jumpstart the offense. Journeyman quarterback Tyler Palko had led the Chiefs to only two touchdowns in four games since taking over for the injured Matt Cassel. Crennel said that if Orton is unable to go, fifth-round draft pick Ricky Stanzi will start for Kansas City.

Nobody gave Kendrick Lewis much thought when the Kansas City Chiefs made him their fifth-round draft pick last year. He wasn't even the best player out of Ole Miss to be selected by the Chiefs - they also picked versatile running back Dexter McCluster in the early rounds. But Scott Pioli saw something in Lewis on video, so the Chiefs' general manager called in to make Lewis the 136th overall pick. Now, plenty of teams are forced to give Lewis a whole lot of thought. The second-year safety has assumed a much bigger role with the Chiefs, who lost Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry to a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the season.

On Monday afternoon Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley confirmed the reports from Sunday that running back Jamaal Charles will be put on Injured Reserve for the remainder of this season. Charles was injured on the Chiefs' first series against Detroit on Sunday. Charles was running right on a 3rd and 4, trying to get out of bounds, and stepped awkwardly on the sideline marker. He tumbled to the ground and grabbed his left knee. He was later taken off the field on a cart.

The Kansas City Chiefs have named offensive line coach Bill Muir as their new offensive coordinator. Muir is replacing former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who announced before Kansas City's final regular season game that he was going to the University of Florida to serve in the same role. Muir is beginning his 34th season in the NFL and has served as both offensive and defensive coordinator. He was offensive line coach from 1995 through 2001 for the New York Jets, where he was part of the coaching staff with current Chiefs head coach Todd Haley.

With Charlie Weis leaving town, head coach Todd Haley says he will consider calling plays next year for the Kansas City Chiefs. Weis was offensive coordinator this season and had a big hand in helping the Chiefs make a six-game improvement and win their first AFC West title since 2003. But Weis is leaving to become offensive coordinator at Florida. Haley said he intends to hire a new offensive coordinator. But he did not rule out calling plays himself next season. A former offensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals, Haley called plays as the head coach his first year in Kansas City in 2009.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley says he has no knowledge of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis possibly taking a similar job with the University of Florida. Various media reports started Weis might leave the Chiefs for Florida after this season. Haley said Friday he was "unaware of anything. " "It would be news to me," Haley said. Weis became offensive coordinator in Kansas City this season after getting fired as coach at Notre Dame last year. He's helped the Chiefs make a worst-to-first turnaround and win the AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley is refusing to say whether an appendectomy will keep quarterback Matt Cassel out of Sunday's game at San Diego. Cassel, who is having one of the best years of any quarterback in the AFC, underwent the procedure on Wednesday morning. Backup Brodie Croyle will play in the showdown between the first- and second-place teams in the AFC West if Cassel does not. Haley said Thursday that Cassel would only be listed as "did not practice. " Croyle, a third-round pick out of Alabama in 2006, is 0-9 as an NFL starter.
