Bruce Haertl and For What It's Worth | February 1, 2013
For What it's Worth on February 1 -- Bill Snyder signs a new five-year deal that will keep him coaching at Kansas State until the age of 78. That's a sentence that wouldn't have been believed four years ago. Lest we forget--- The 2005 retirement of Bill Snyder was generally accepted as the right thing by K-Staters after he went 9-13 in the last two seasons of his first tenure. His return after three forgettable years from Ron Prince at the Wildcat helm was widely looked upon as a stop gap. Four years later, there's nobody else the Wildcat Nation would stand for on its sideline.

New coach, new quarterback, new attitude - and the same kind of early season loss to a middling opponent that got Turner Gill fired last season. Now, it's up to Charlie Weis, Dayne Crist and everyone else in the Kansas program to prove these aren't the same old Jayhawks - that their late-game collapse Saturday against Rice isn't a precursor of struggles yet to come, beginning this weekend against No. 16 TCU. Crist almost bristled Tuesday when...

Kansas coach Charlie Weis is ready to get his new team on the field. The Jayhawks play their annual spring game on Saturday, and there is plenty riding on the outcome. It's the first chance for high-profile transfers such as Dayne Crist to impress in a game environment, and the first opportunity for dozens of other guys to lay claim to a roster spot. Weis is in his first season as the coach at Kansas. He was hired to resurrect a recently winning program that had fallen on hard times under Turner Gill, who was fired after a 2-10 season.

Former KU head football coach Turner Gill has been hired by Liberty University to become their new football coach. Gill was fired from KU two and a half weeks ago after disastrous run as the head coach with the Jayhawks, compiling a 5-19 record in two seasons, winning only one Big 12 game. His contract was bought out by KU and athletic boosters. He had three years remaining on a contract that guaranteed him $10 million in salary. KU has since hired former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis to lead the Jayhawks.

The University of Kansas fired head football coach Turner Gill on Sunday. Gill just finished the second year of a 5-year contract that was worth $10 million. Gill released this statement Monday morning: “I would like to thank the University of Kansas for the opportunity to be its head football coach. On behalf of our staff, I want to thank the players for putting their heart and soul into this football program the past two years. I hope nothing but the best for all their future endeavors, both on and off the field.” Gill, 49, was hired away from Buffalo in December 2009 by former athletic director Lew Perkins to replace Mark Mangino.

There are plenty of storylines surrounding the annual Border War between Kansas and Missouri. Gary Pinkel will be back on the sideline for Saturday's game at Arrowhead Stadium after serving a one-game suspension following his drunken driving arrest. Turner Gill will be on the Kansas sideline for what could be the final time. The second-year coach has been under fire all year. Although athletic director Sheahon Zenger has said he won't make a decision until after the season, there are rumors Gill could be coaching for his job. Topping it all off is the fact that Kansas and Missouri could be playing for the final time.

Kansas won't have to look far Saturday to find an example of a program that has clawed its way to respectability. Baylor was one of the worst programs in college football when Art Briles took over. With a win over the Jayhawks, they could become bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1991-92. The Bears were 31-94 over the 11 season before Briles arrived. The Jayhawks won the Orange Bowl just a few years ago. But at 2-7 and without a Big 12 win this season, time is running out for coach Turner Gill to engineer an upset victory and perhaps salvage Year 2 of his own rebuilding project.

Freshmen tailbacks Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron combined for 255 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Texas ended a five-game home losing streak in the Big 12 with a 43-0 romp over Kansas on Saturday night. Texas rushed for 441 yards as a team against the worst defense in the country.
