Wichita State University president Don Beggs says he plans to resign from his position. Beggs, who is 70, has been president of WSU since 1999. He is the 12th president in the history of Wichita State. Beggs says his resignation will take effect once the Kansas Board of Regents names a successor, which is expected to be in place during the summer of 2012. In a statement to WSU staff Beggs said "The Kansas Board of Regents is determined to identify a person who is committed to our students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Perry Ellis has named four schools he will consider scholarships from this fall. The four schools are: The University of Kansas Kansas State University Wichita State University The University of Kentucky Ellis has scheduled in-home visits with University of Kansas and Kansas State for September 9.

Heather Robben and BreAnna Dawkins will not return to the Wichita State University women’s basketball team, Head Coach Jody Adams announced today.     Robben will transfer to NCAA Division II Emporia State for her senior season while Dawkins has not announced her future plans.     “We appreciate the time Heather and BreAnna gave to Wichita State and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors both on and off the basketball court,” Adams said.

Tyler Grimes hit a three-run home run while Josh Smith pitched 5.2 innings of shutout baseball as Wichita State University defeated Indiana State University, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium. The win puts the Shockers at 32-24 overall and 11-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State will welcome in-state rival Kansas State on Tuesday, May 17, for a 6:30 p.m., non-conference match-up in the final scheduled home game of the season. Indiana State falls to 25-24, 7-11 in the conference.

This week is the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides, when beginning on May 4, 1961, a group of 13 people boarded two buses in Washington and drove into the deep South to confront racism, segregation and violence against African Americans. The Civil Rights movement had been gaining steam since early victories with Brown vs. Board of Education in Topeka, ending segregation in schools in 1954, but Kansas also played another lead role in the Civil Rights movement, with the first successful student led sit in at Dockum Drug Store.

The Rotary Club of East Wichita Foundation announced Thursday the establishment of the George F. Fahnestock scholarship for an incoming freshman attending Wichita State University.   Fahnestock was a Charter Member of East Wichita Rotary and proud alum of WSU. Each year the Foundation will award a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating Sedgwick County high school senior who plans to attend Wichita State.   The Fahnestock Scholarship will be in addition to other scholarships the Foundation awards annually.

Gregg Marshall is staying put as the head coach at Wichita State University. Marshall says he's staying at the school because he has a "great situation. " Marshall led the Shockers to the NIT title last week, beating Alabama to finish 29-8, a school record for wins in a season. The former Winthrop coach had been linked to the vacant job at North Carolina State. He said he didn't want to address rumors that he had turned down offers from other schools. It was Marshall's fourth season at Wichita State.

Margo Pruis, Wichita State’s all-time winningest pitcher, has been hired as assistant softball coach at Wichita State University, Head Coach Mike Perniciaro announced today.   “It is great to bring Margo back into the Shocker family,” Perniciaro said. “She was an outstanding pitcher while she was at Wichita State, and is familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference. I think that will help bring success to the pitching staff. She also pitched professionally, and that experience will be beneficial, as well.

By Kim Hynes (WICHITA, Kan.) Fewer students will be on Wichita State's campus this summer. "There are not as many classes I'd like to sign up for," said student Samantha Werbin. That's because the university reduced its summer school schedule because of budget cuts. "It's frustrating," she said. Werbin says not only are there fewer classes, but the ones offered are already full. "It makes me have to look at my schedule over time and figure out how I'm going to manage getting into the classes I need to graduate," she said.
